Poll shows 50-40 split between Trump-Biden among Utahns

SALT LAKE CITY — A new poll that asked Utahns who they would vote for between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden shows only a 10 percent difference between the two, according to a report from The Salt Lake Tribune.

Y2 Analytics surveyed 1,214 likely voters online from Sept. 26 to Oct. 4. When asked who they would vote for if the presidential election were held “today,” about 50 percent chose Trump while about 40 percent went with Biden. About 10 percent said they favored another candidate, and about 1 percent were undecided.

The poll has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.

Trump carried Utah in 2016 with 45.5 percent of the vote, while Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton received 27.5 percent. The Tribune points out that it is difficult to determine if and how Trump’s level of support has changed since then because of independent candidate Evan McMullin getting 21.5 percent of the state’s vote.

In presidential elections, a Democrat has not received more than 40 percent support since Lyndon B. Johnson carried the state in 1964 with 59.4 percent.

The poll also breaks down the numbers by political affiliation, gender, and whether they see each presidential and vice presidential candidate as religious.
