Texas Baptist Men: Providing help, hope, and healing in the face of disaster
Over the weekend, a team of dedicated disaster relief volunteers from Texas Baptist Men sprang into action after a devastating tornado swept through Little Rock, Arkansas. The group’s Director of Disaster Relief, David Wells, had been vigilantly monitoring the weather and had already mobilized volunteers and equipment, ready to offer aid and comfort at a moment’s notice. The initial deployment crew included a command center and a large generator, which enabled them to quickly assess the damage.
Texas Baptist Men crews worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to assess the widespread damage caused by the tornado. They were determined to provide essential support before additional volunteers arrived in the coming days with power tools and a mobile kitchen. According to the mayor, over 2,000 homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged, and the situation was dire.
Texas Baptist Men is a Christian organization based in Dallas, Texas, with a mission to mobilize Christ followers to change the world by meeting crucial needs after disasters, providing clean drinking water for people worldwide, and equipping the next generation to make a difference. Founded in 1967 as a men’s ministry of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Texas Baptist Men has grown to include more than 17,000 volunteers from various backgrounds, ages, and denominations who serve in various ministries.
Disaster relief is one of the primary ministries of Texas Baptist Men, and it delivers help, hope, and healing to millions of people affected by natural or man-made disasters. With more than 5,000 trained disaster relief volunteers who can respond quickly and effectively to any situation, Texas Baptist Men provides services such as mass feeding, chainsaw work, debris removal, mud-out, ash-out, temporary roofing, shower units, laundry units, childcare, and chaplaincy. They are a beacon of hope and aid to those in dire need.
The water ministry is another vital aspect of Texas Baptist Men, which shares clean drinking water and the “living water” of Christ around the world. Texas Baptist Men has drilled more than 2,500 water wells in 80 countries, installed more than 12,000 community water systems in 35 countries, and distributed more than 30,000 water filters in 75 countries. TBM also trains local leaders and churches to maintain and operate the water systems and share the gospel with their communities.
Texas Baptist Men’s ministries extend beyond disaster relief and water. Builders construct camps, churches, cabinets, and more for God’s glory. Discipleship raises a new generation to change the world through Royal Ambassadors (RA), Challengers, and Youth on Mission (YOM). TBM also has other special projects that address specific needs such as hunger relief, medical missions, and prison ministry.
TBM has its headquarters in Dallas, Texas, where it operates a warehouse, a training center, and an office. Additionally, it has regional offices throughout Texas to better serve the communities in need. Texas Baptist Men is supported by donations from individuals, churches, and organizations who share its vision and mission. They also partner with other local, national, and international agencies such as Southern Baptists of Texas Convention (SBTC), North American Mission Board (NAMB), International Mission Board (IMB), Baptist World Alliance (BWA), and Samaritan’s Purse.
In conclusion, Texas Baptist Men is a remarkable organization that acts as a force for good in the world. They provide essential aid and comfort to those in need during natural disasters, offer clean drinking water, and equip the next generation to make a difference.
