Utah concealed carry bill clears another hurdle

A bill that would eliminate the requirement for a permit to carry a concealed weapon in Utah has passed a Senate committee.

House Bill 60, sponsored by Rep. Walt Brooks (R-St. George), now advances to the full Senate. If it passes, it will go to the governor’s desk where it is supported by Gov. Spencer Cox.

The Senate Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Committee approved the bill Friday afternoon on a 5 to 2 vote.

During debate, lawmakers made a few additional changes to the bill, reducing the amount of leftover money from the state’s concealed weapons account — where permit fees are paid — that would go toward suicide prevention efforts and firearm safety. The bill now specifies that 50 percent of excess money from that fund would go toward those efforts, while an earlier version of the bill allocated 100 percent.
