Utah legislators advance bill to increase registration fees on electric cars

A legislative committee gave a stamp of approval to a bill that would require electric vehicle owners in Utah to pay more to register their vehicles.

House Bill 209 would more than double the registration fees for most electric, hybrid, and alternative fuel vehicles.

Rep. Jeffrey D. Stenquist, R-Draper, said the increase is necessary to help the state’s strained road fund.

“Nobody is paying their fair share right now,” Stenquist said, emphasizing the state is transferring $600 million each year from the general fund to the transportation fund.

Stenquist said market demands will continue to drive electric car sales, with or without breaks from the state on registration fees.
