Second man arrested in West Valley birthday party shooting
WEST VALLEY CITY — A second man has been arrested in connection with a shooting at a birthday party that left the victim critically injured.
Brian Figueroa, 21, was arrested Wednesday for investigation of obstructing justice.
About 3:30 a.m. on June 20, Nicholas Lanzalaca was shot multiple times while attending a birthday party near 2400 South and 1300 West.
“The victim was shot seven times and is still to this day in critical condition,” police wrote in a new booking affidavit.
A neighbor reported seeing two people running away from the scene. Omar Cortez-Izarraraz, 21, was later arrested and charged in 3rd District Court with seven counts of shooting someone causing serious injury, a first-degree felony, and obstructing justice, a second-degree felony.
Police have now identified Figueroa as the second man, the affidavit states.
“Brian was seen arguing with the victim on several accounts throughout the party. Brian and Omar left the scene and returned a short time after, called for the victim to come out of the residence, and Omar shot him. Brian was seen jumping into the driver’s seat of the car and speeding away with Omar in the passenger seat,” according to the affidavit.
“Brian was involved in a heinous shooting that put the victim on a ventilator for over two weeks straight and made the victim undergo over a dozen surgeries,” police wrote.
