A 72-year-old Salt Lake City woman is dead after being hit by a truck while riding her bike in Summit County, according to Summit County Police.
On Friday morning, police were called out to West Hoytsville Road on reports of a cyclist being hit by a truck. A pickup truck pulling a double axel trailer, driven by a 67-year-old Summit County man, hit the woman who later died from her injuries at the scene of the accident.
The man driving the truck told police he was turning into a driveway at a low speed when he looked for oncoming traffic. The woman and her husband were riding their bikes in the opposite direction of the truck when she was hit.
According to police, the woman’s husband was traveling several feet behind her and crashed his bike after he avoided the truck. He received minor injuries and both riders were wearing helmets at the time of the accident, police said.
Police said the driver of the truck was issued a citation for failing to yield. He is not suspected of being impaired.
In a press release, police noted that as the weather continues to warm, motorists need to pay extra attention and watch for bikes and motorcycles.
