Avalanche forecasters and search and rescue teams want you to be prepared before you head out to enjoy the fresh snow
Utah – The Utah Avalanche Center provides daily avalanche forecasts for the state, as well as resources on staying safe in the Utah mountains.
According to the Avalanche Center, on Friday there was considerable avalanche danger for upper elevation slopes.
Search and rescue teams in counties all over Utah are preparing for situations that often come with heavy winter snow.
According to the Davis County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team, they have already handled several calls in the mountains this season.
“Overprepare is what you need to do any time you hit the trail. Even on a normal trail, you have to be avalanche aware because that trail could be connected to avalanche terrain above it,” said the first vice commander of DCSO SAR Kyle Wilhelm.
Several people got out to enjoy the fresh snow on trails near Farmington canyon on Friday afternoon.
“I can’t stop smiling, the sun came up and the snow started sparkling a bit,” said hiker Carolyn Stwertka. “I hope there’s more because then that reduces some of the powder panics, and people get used to driving in the snow. It helps with the water pack, makes us all happy, reasons why we moved to Utah in the first place.”
