Concerned citizens in West Valley City are worried about a troublesome intersection
West Valley City, Utah – After five fatal collisions at a particular West Valley City crossroads in less than a month, residents of Utah have voiced their concerns about the area.
A multi-vehicle incident at 3500 South and Mountain View Corridor on Friday night claimed the lives of three persons.
“I was heartbroken. It brought tears to my eyes to think somebody else got hurt on this intersection,” said Sheila Baker.
All three of the fatalities, according to West Valley City Police, were in the same vehicle.
Drivers in the area like Baker are not surprised by the awful news.
“It’s scary. It’s a scary intersection and I don’t know what they need to do to resolve it but it’s going to be an issue,” she said.
According to Gabriel Delgado, he stays vigilant no matter what color the signal is when he approaches a junction.
“A lot of times the cars come extremely fast and they sometimes don’t catch the light so they just fly right through the light,” he said.
In an attempt to safeguard the eastbound and westbound lanes, several neighbors have proposed the notion of building an overpass.
“It’s the north and south [lanes],” said Baker. “The cars are going too fast and they’re not paying attention.”
A couple in their late sixties lost their lives at the same crossroads not even three weeks prior when their sedan ran a red light.
“You just got to pay attention. You’ve got to pay attention to your blind spots, pay attention to what’s going on around you, especially if you have passengers with you,” said Delgado. “You always want to take that extra caution and be aware of all surroundings.”
The three victims’ names have not been formally disclosed by the West Valley City Police Department.
One was a woman employed at a Midvale permanent cosmetics salon. Next Sunday, Simplicity Ink will hold a memorial fundraising in her honor.
Discounted beauty services will be available from noon to five p.m. The money raised from the taco truck and raffle will also go toward paying for funeral and medical costs.
