Mapleton, Utah – According to the police reports, white car was traveling southbound at 70 mph in a 30 mph zone while Mapleton Police were patrolling for speeding violations on north Main street  on Monday.

The driver sped up in what police called an “attempt to evade the officer”, when police attempted to pull the vehicle over.

Another officer watched as the car failed to stop for a stop sign and passed another vehicle in an unsafe manner. Police said they chose not to pursue the car any further after it came very close to hitting the observing officer head-on.

Ten minutes later, the initial pursuing officer patrolled the area of 3000 S. 800 West looking for the white car. The car sped away, heading south, into an area of construction and ran head-on into a concrete barrier.

The driver had crawled out of the car and was lying on the ground when police arrived at the scene of the accident, they said.

The police say, the driver was conscious and able to communicate. The driver, a juvenile, indicated to the officer that their actions were suicidal in nature.

The driver was transported to the hospital.

The investigation is still ongoing.
