Utah sends 57 firefighters to help battle Oregon wildfires
Salt Lake City, Utah – 57 Utah firefighters were sent to Oregon today to help with that state’s wildfires for more than two weeks.
According to officials, the group is from nine Utah fire agencies and deployed from the Maverik Center in West Valley City Sunday morning.
One of the wildfires in Oregon grew to more than 280,000 acres by Saturday and so far has required more than 2,000 firefighters to combat it.
According to the Utah Division of Emergency Management, it is planned the firefighters will deploy for 14 working days plus travel days. The deployment is part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, or EMAC, that coordinates state-to-state mutual aid through state emergency agencies. Utah offered the help through EMAC that Oregon has confirmed and accepted.
Equipment and firefighters are from fire departments in Draper, Layton, Lone Peak, Murray, Orem, Park City, Weber, West Valley City, and Unified Fire Authority. They are expected to arrive in the Bend, Oregon area Monday.
The deployment includes two task forces and lead officers.
