Fire departments across Utah are preparing to send firefighters to California
Salt Lake City, Utah — Utah Fire Departments are preparing to send firefighters to California.
“Utah wants to be able to help,” said Wade Mathews, spokesman for the Utah Division of Emergency Management. “We know that there’s a need there, and we want to be able to fill that need, and we believe that when we put out the call for help, those people will be coming and helping us as well.”
According to Utah emergency managers, they are still putting together a roster of equipment and personnel, but about 35 firefighters may go. California requested 150 engines and hundreds of firefighters from across the country.
“These wildland fires that are burning in states around us are obviously having an impact here as well, just on our air quality and our health,” Mathews said.
The mission will last two weeks, with a couple of travel days as well. Crews may leave on Monday.
Firefighters from Utah have also been helping in Montana and Oregon this summer.
