Salt Lake City, Utah – David Sherwood first began selling vinyl records at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when he said he had 15,000 records sitting at home.

It started with him holding live auctions on Facebook to sell vinyl records during the pandemic, but it didn’t stop there.

“Over the past four years, it’s grown and expanded to the point where we now needed our physical record store,” Sherwood said.

Now, Sherwood is celebrating two major accomplishments: The grand opening of his brick-and-mortar record store (called Daybreak Records, located in Sandy), and a submission to the Guinness Book of World Records for visiting the most record stores in a day.

“Records, to me, embody this kind of nostalgic factor,” Sherwood said. “The reason I love records is ’cause it’s tied to a time and a memory.”

Sherwood and his team flew to Los Angeles prior to the actual store’s debut to investigate other record stores and see what they were missing.

“While we were doing that, we had the idea, ‘What if we break a Guinness World Record while we’re doing that?’” Sherwood said.

Sherwood claimed to have hired a driver, planned the “ideal route,” and made an effort to visit as many record shops as he could.

In a 24-hour period, he managed to visit 28 stores, arriving at the final one at midnight.

Sherwood claimed that breaking a record required a bit more work than he had initially anticipated, but he had always wanted to hold a world record. According to him, he needed to purchase a record while he was there, sign a log book at every store, and turn in paperwork.

“With any luck, they’ll send us a beautiful, like, plaque that we can hang on the wall in a few weeks,” Sherwood said.

Sherwood stated that in addition to breaking records and setting a world record, his group also intended the company to have a positive social impact. In an effort to earn as much money as possible for Primary Children’s Hospital, Sherwood said his team usually organizes two charity auctions every year.

Sherwood revealed that Daybreak Records has a vintage 1964 jukebox, and that any money put into it will be sent to the hospital.

Daybreak albums is having its grand opening on Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The store will sell a range of historic albums in addition to some recent releases.

Sherwood stated that RC Willey and the record store had teamed up for a big opening giveaway, with over $1,000 worth of merchandise up for grabs.

A couple of record players, a 65-inch TV, and some Bose headphones are among the things up for grabs during the event.

Daybreak Records can be found in Sandy, Utah at 9445 S Union Square, Suite A.
