Thrift stores in Salt Lake City assist folks in turning over a new leaf

Salt Lake City, Utah – Lillies of the Fields is a secondhand business founded by a mother whose quest to find her son inspired her to support the homeless population and recently released inmates.

“I decided that I didn’t want anyone else to go through what I go through,” the thrift store owner Mary Daniels stated. “I have more than enough thanks to God.”

The South Main Street store, which has been there for ten years, took off when Daniels started looking for her homeless son back in 2008.

He’s been on and off the streets since she finally located him.

She said, “He’s still out there.”

Daniels claimed that although the store was once a street ministry, it was founded by her son.

She and a nearby pastor gathered and distributed clothing and other necessities to the homeless population at Pioneer Park for almost ten years. Her collection was becoming bigger. Then it was converted into a store in 2015.

The store donates its profits to a variety of charities, including as Savers and Deseret Industries.

But, she added, anyone who is homeless or recently released from prison is welcome to visit the store and pick up some fresh clothes for an interview or court appearance.

Daniels declared, “Anywhere there are streets, wherever there is someone sleeping on the streets, they are welcome.”
