Utah’s six Electoral College votes go to Trump

SALT LAKE CITY — With a little applause and no drama that has played out in other states, Utah’s six Electoral College votes were cast for President Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence.

During a meeting of the Board of Electors on Monday, the votes were cast as determined by the winner of the presidential vote in Utah. The electors sat in their seats and signed papers verifying the results and applauded after they finished.

Electors are chosen by the political party that wins the election. In this case, it’s the Utah Republican Party. Utah’s electors this year were: former House Speaker Greg Hughes; Washington County Republican Party Chair Jimi Kestin; former congressional candidate Trent Christensen; former congressional candidate Chris Herrod; and former Box Elder County Commission candidate Kris Udy.

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes dropped out of being an elector. The crowd was told he was quarantining after being exposed to someone who had tested positive for COVID-19. He recently joined a controversial lawsuit filed by the state of Texas seeking to overturn the results of the election that former Vice-President Joe Biden won. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected the lawsuit.
