Reports: Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz to finalize max contract extension
Donovan Mitchell and the Utah Jazz are set to finalize the details of a max contract extension when free agency opens in mid-October.
Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes reports the deal is expected to be worth approximately $155-$170 million over five years.
Utah’s season ended on Tuesday after the Jazz lost to the Denver Nuggets in Game 7.
Mitchell, 23, averaged 24,0 points, 4.3 assists and 4.4 rebounds on 44.9% shooting during the season, according to Sports Illustrated. The young All-Star averaged 36.3 points, five rebounds and 4.9 assists, and shot 52.5% from the field and 51.5% in the series.
After becoming one of four players in NBA history to score at least 50 points twice in the same playoff series, Mitchell’s worst performance came in Game 7. The All-Star guard had 22 points, but shot 9-of-22, with nine turnovers, according to the New York Post.
Yahoo Sports reports Mitchell entered the playoffs with concerns about injury because of his contract ending. If he got hurt in the bubble, a serious injury could have impacted his future earnings. However, Mitchell said he was “all in” after his teammates told him to play.
“Once my teammates told me they wanted to play, then I was all in. I couldn’t make it all about myself,” Mitchell said on Tuesday, per Yahoo Sports. “There are younger guys who aren’t established in this league and needed this time to show their value. It would have been selfish of me to stand in the way of that. I couldn’t let my contract get in the way of the bigger picture.”
I had to rely on God. If I got hurt, it was God’s will. But I put my trust in Him and didn’t worry about potentially getting injured. That allowed me to go out there and play. My faith was in God.
Rudy Gobert could also be primed for a contract extension after the season in which he averaged 15.1 points and 13.5 rebounds per game, according to Sports Illustrated.
