Utah man who was serving a 30-year prison sentence dies in prison
Salt Lake City, Utah — According to corrections officials in Alaska, a Utah man who was serving a 30-year prison sentence for killing his wife on a cruise ship has died.
According to the Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC), on Wednesday 43-year-old Kenneth Manzanares, was found unresponsive in his cell and was pronounced dead shortly after.
“No foul play is suspected. This death is not COVID-19 related,” a statement from the DOC says.
The DOC says that Manzanares’ death will be investigated by the Alaska State Troopers and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to court records, Manzanares killed his wife Kristy during an argument while the family was on an Alaskan cruise in July 2017. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison last month after pleading guilty to murder earlier this year.
Manzanares became upset with his wife when she told him she wanted a divorce, prosecutors said. Affidavits filed in federal court said Manzanares became enraged with his wife because she would not stop laughing at him.
According to witnesses, passengers had to grab Kristy Manzanares’ body to prevent Kenneth from throwing her overboard.
