Two Utah police departments warned residents of scam calls
Tooele, Utah — Scam callers are using department numbers to reach people. Two Utah police departments warned residents.
Both, the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office and Smithfield City Police Department issued warnings on social media regarding these calls.
According to Toole officials, someone is claiming to be a deputy and telling residents they missed jury duty.
Officers added that the scammers are then requesting a fine be paid via Venmo and/or prepaid debit cards.
Both police departments said the callers are using their department phone numbers to appear legitimate.
In Tooele, the number they are using is 435-882-5600.
“These calls are fraudulent; the Sheriff’s Office will never call and try to collect money from you,” Tooele officials stated. “Please let others know so our citizens don’t fall prey to these criminals.”
Smithfield officials said if residents are suspicious of the call, to please call Public Safety Dispatch at 435-753-7555 to verify the information.
