A significant donation to a local pet shelter is made possible by a social media post that goes viral
West Valley City, Utah — Thanks to a social media post, West Valley City Animal Services received a surprise delivery on Monday.
Nearly seven years old, Scout is a golden retriever. Dog Friendly SLC is a website and Instagram account that he and his mother, Brandy Chenoweth, manage.
“I was unable to locate precise information regarding where I may take my dog to eat on a patio, for example. “I reasoned that if I had that question, I’m sure others did too,” Chenoweth said.
She has been using her social media influence to support other furry companions for almost 6 years since she first began to establish herself online. With over 200 animals, West Valley Animal Services is overflowing and in need of assistance with supplies and food.
“I think the automatic assumption with dog rescues is that I have to adopt a pet if I want to help,” Chenoweth said. “Some people just aren’t in a position to be able to do that, and there are other ways that you can help.”
In order to accomplish that, she posted a need for assistance to the community, asking: “Would you consider contributing $7 for Scout’s impending seventh birthday? Imagine the positive impact our community can make if you use the Venmo account dogfriendlyslc.
The good came in buckets after that!
Chenoweth stated, “I thought we’d raise $1000.” “Around $16,000 total, including what was sent to them and what was sent to us.”
One dollar at a time, they increased this.
Chenoweth continued, “It’s been such a fun exercise in how small gifts really make a big impact, with over 500 people donating, mostly small donations of $7, $5, and $10.”
The shelter had an early Christmas! Because people not only donated cash but also purchased items for animal services from their Amazon wish lists, they received a surprise delivery on Monday.
“For them to know that so many people and that food is not something they have to worry about for the foreseeable future has really been a tide-turning moment of hope,” Chenoweth added.
The wish list for Rescue Rovers, a volunteer foster-based dog rescue, was likewise managed by people.
Their objective is to assist more animals while they search for permanent homes.
Chenoweth remarked, “To be honest, it feels a little surreal.”
