Car broke natural gas line, 38 homes evacuated in SLC
Salt Lake City, Utah — Friday morning a natural gas leak caused evacuations and closure of a stretch of State Street in Salt Lake City.
According to the police just after midnight, after car crashed into the building that houses “Glen’s Key Lock and Safe”, a small fire occurred and several people had to be extricated from the car.
The driver had minor injuries but the impact broke a natural gas line, and the gas quickly spread.
Dozens of people had been displaced by the leak, and State Street was closed between 900 South and 1300 South.
Fortunately a little after 7 a.m. crews were able to shut off the gas, but it took some time for the gas in the area to clear. State Street was reopened in both directions around 7:30 a.m.
At least 38 homes in the area had been evacuated, and the Sorenson Center was opened for those people.
