Debris flow forces evacuation of 20 homes in Mapleton
Mapleton, Utah — Thursday night twenty families were ordered to evacuate their homes after heavy rains triggered a debris flow on the east bench of Mapleton.
According to Mapleton Fire, rain-drenched the burn scar from the Ether Hollow Fire, and the water brought down mud across Quiet Meadow Lane.
Fire Chief Nick Glasgow said there were sandbags in place to protect properties and no damage was reported to any homes as a result of the debris flow.
Homeowners who were evacuated said they had been warned earlier this could happen.
“They did a great job informing everybody about the possibilities. They showed us maps, what could happen, and what kind of weather event could bring the mudslide. So when this was happening, this was exactly what they described,” evacuated resident Carl Hale said.
