How to file a claim if road construction damages your vehicle

Salt Lake City, Utah – The Beehive State’s residents often make jokes about Utah having just two seasons: winter and construction.

Teams from the Utah Department of Transportation and nearby public utility departments are active during “construction season.” Usually, they are tasked with modernizing Utah’s roads or fixing damage caused by the state’s severe winters.

Accidents sometimes happen, even though staff usually do a fantastic job of clearing the roads of any debris. But are you entitled to receive compensation if your vehicle is harmed while you’re traveling through a construction zone on a Utah highway?

Only by submitting a claim to the Utah Department of Transportation will you be able to learn more. Not all claims, though, are qualified for payment. According to UDOT, each claim is assessed and looked into individually.

In order to file a claim, a driver must stop their vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so if they hit any debris or have any damage done to it. Following that, drivers should record the incident’s date, time, and location and snap pictures of the scene, including any damage to their vehicle.

As part of the claim procedure, drivers will be required to complete a questionnaire that includes information on the kind of damage that was sustained, a thorough account of what happened, and whether or not an insurance claim was made. Along with a license plate number, drivers must also provide the make, model, and year of their vehicle.

UDOT stated that it would take roughly four days for the agency to acknowledge receipt of the claim once it was filed. Before a motorist receives a response with a preliminary review, another three weeks will pass.

It’s crucial to remember that the UDOT does not oversee every road in Utah. UDOT solely maintains or owns state-owned roadways. UDOT is unable to assist if your car was damaged off a state road since local towns are responsible for maintaining the local roadways.

Up to a year following an injury to a person or damage to a vehicle or piece of property, claims for damages may be filed.
