Layton, Utah – Attendees at a Layton theater might have felt a little too close to the action on Saturday night when fireworks sparked a large-scale police response.

According to Layton Police, reports of gunfire at the AMC Layton Hills 9 cinema located at 728 West 1425 North were received by dispatch at approximately 9:00 p.m. There might have been an active shooter, which is why there was such a large police response.

It was subsequently determined that what many initially believed to be gunshots were actually fireworks that had been set off close to the theater’s doors once police had arrived on the scene and secured the area. Neither building damage nor injuries were reported. It was cleaned at approximately 10:30 p.m.

There had not been any arrests as of the time of reporting. It’s important to remember that in Utah, using personal fireworks at this time of year is now prohibited.

Only two days prior to, one day of, and one day following Independence Day (July 4) and Pioneer Day (July 24) may fireworks be set off. In addition, they can be released on New Year’s Eve and Lunar New Year’s Eve, which falls on January 28, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. the following day.

If fireworks are discovered being lit improperly, there could be a $1,000 punishment.
