Salt Lake City, Utah – After members of the Secret Service escorted former President Donald Trump off the stage after he was shot in the ear on Saturday afternoon, we spoke with a retired Secret Service agent who resides in Utah about their responsibilities on the ground. The agent stated that they were responsible for protecting the environment.

The Salt Lake City field office was under the supervision of Dennis Crandall, who served as a Secret Service agent for thirty years and was the resident agent in charge. He stated that Secret Service agents are not only responsible for covering and evacuating the candidate or president that they are guarding, but they also work to set up protection in advance, which allows them to play a vital role in the political process.

“I like to think it’s very important,” said Crandall.

According to him, the job is significantly more difficult than the majority of people believe it to be.

“People say, ‘Why don’t we just lock them up so nobody gets to them?’ People want to see these candidates, they want to see the president, so there has to be common ground, somehow, so people have access to these candidates within reason,” said Crandall.

As a result of the fact that he was present with the daughter of President Ronald Reagan throughout the time when an attempt was made on his life, he has been a close witness to these events. In addition, he mentioned that agents of the Secret Service are the ones who detect potential dangers and then conduct exhaustive background investigations in order to assist in putting together the complete picture.

“And we like to think that agents do it as discreetly as possible, and you can see them come out of nowhere and respond, and off they went,” said Crandall.
