Salt Lake City, Utah – Track and field isn’t included in the Winter Olympics schedule, but Salt Lake City moved one step closer to hosting the Games in 2034 on Thursday.

The Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games formally applied to be the preferred host of the event to the International Olympic Committee just before to a ceremony at the Utah State Capitol.

Governor Spencer Cox and Mayor Erin Mendenhall of Salt Lake City participated in the events that bring Utah one step closer to serving as the host state for the Games for the first time since 2002.

“Utah is the state of sport and we look forward to bringing the Olympics back to the Beehive State!,” Cox posted to social media.

The official proposal, which spans thousands of pages, contains strategies to combat corruption and sports betting in addition to a localized vision for improving the Winter Olympics and environmental targets.

“We are officially submitted for the 2034 Games! Congratulations to everyone, thank you for all of your support,” said Fraser Bullock, President and CEO of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games.

After being selected as the IOC’s preferred host in November, Salt Lake City is widely seen as a lock to host the Games.

“[The IOC] realize that that they are working with people who intend to be great partners for the IOC, not just for these Games, but for the future,” said Gene Sykes, Chairman of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee. “And so I think there is a great deal of confidence in everything that you’ve done and what you represent and what you bring to the entire Olympic movement and it’s very exciting.”

During the Summer Olympics in Paris, the International Olympic Committee is anticipated to publicly announce its choice for the hosts of the Winter Olympics in 2030 and 2034.

The Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games requested that the final IOC election take place on July 24 in order to coincide with Pioneer Day. This information is reported by GamesBids.com.
