Park City, Utah – In order to ensure public safety, the busiest area of Park City will be made pedestrian-only for the first time in anyone’s memory: Main Street will be closed to automobile traffic during the Sundance Film Festival.

The popular road that runs through the center of the city will be blocked to cars from January 23 until February 2, according to a statement made by Park City Police on Wednesday.

Movie premieres and other festival activities are held in Park City and Salt Lake City, with the majority of the pedestrian influx occurring in Park City’s downtown. According to the police, this modification “prioritizes public safety.”

This move may have been partially prompted by the New Year’s Day tragedy in New Orleans, where a man killed 14 people by driving into a crowd, albeit it was not explicitly mentioned.
Carpenter weighed the potential effects on the city with the public safety measures in his announcement on Wednesday.

In the press release, Carpenter stated, “We recognize that preventing cars from using Main Street enhances public safety, but it may also cause short-term inconvenience to residents and small businesses.” “After careful consideration and consultation with several important federal, state, and local public safety agencies and event partners, it became clear that this was the necessary and correct decision.”

The affected “stakeholders” will get information from the city and its police department on Main Street access during the pedestrian-only timeframe.
