Huntsville, Utah — There is still a safety concern in Ogden Canyon following many collisions, including a fatal head-on incident on Wednesday.

In order to find out what improvements the community would like to see to make the canyon a safer place to drive, UDOT held an open house in Huntsville on Thursday.

According to Ogden Canyon resident Kristen Mitchell, “I think it’s probably top of mind for most people who live there, not just the safety – but what the possible resolutions will be because that will affect the people that live there.” “Enforcement of the speed limit is one of the most important things.”

People could speak with UDOT representatives and provide input on how the roads feel during the open house.

“People are really excited about it,” UDOT’s Mitch Shaw remarked. “They have a unique perspective because they travel and use the road on a daily basis. They see things that, to be honest, we can’t always see.”

A tragedy that occurred during the summer brought attention to this persistent problem.

“A collision claimed the lives of a father and his daughter. “The load wasn’t secured, and there was a large piece of machinery that wasn’t,” Shaw added.

The deaths of Richard and Sally Hendrickson sparked additional discussions on the need for change.

Christine Brown, a resident of Middle Fork, stated, “I believe they should limit the length on vehicles.”

In addition to installing a centerline rumble strip and replacing antiquated barriers, UDOT is now developing additional safety measures.

To ease traffic, some locals are hoping for a non-motorized trail.

Jeff Harrison, a resident of Huntsville, stated that if we rode our bikes up and down the canyon, more cars would be off the road.

Michael Hughes, an Ogden Canyon resident, continued, “There is a way to essentially split the road at the bottom, where the bike path is supposed to be, so that in conjunction with using speed cameras would be our ideal scenario.”

At this time, UDOT does not have a schedule for when it may decide to make adjustments or put them into effect.
