Salt Lake City, Utah — Mikhail Sergachev, a defenseman with the Lightning, was acquired by the Utah Hockey Club as part of their ongoing scheming during the NHL Draft.

Before the second day of the draft in Las Vegas, Utah struck a trade that sent Conor Geekie and JJ Moser to Tampa, along with a 2025 second-round pick and a 2024 seventh-round pick.

In 2020 and 2021, Sergachev won two Stanley Cups while playing with the Lightning. Sergachev made a comeback to the Tampa lineup during the playoffs, despite injuring his leg in the middle of the previous season.

“Bringing in one of the premier defenseman in the NHL, and a two-time Stanley Cup champion, demonstrates our commitment to our fans and to our team that we will take the necessary steps to drive this organization towards its potential,” said Chris Armstrong, president of hockey operations of Utah Hockey Club.

Despite being a good player, Sergachev will cost Utah a lot because of his $8.5 million yearly salary cap hit, which is set to expire in the 2030–31 campaign.

Utah also acquired for Devils defenseman John Marino in return for today’s 49th pick and a second-round pick in 2025, according to a move that was announced minutes later.

The transactions took place just hours after Utah traded a number of draft picks on Friday night to obtain Colorado’s No. 24 overall pick, which allowed them to choose forward Cole Beaudoin from Barrie.
