Utahn charged with attempting to murder man who broke his window
SALT LAKE CITY — Criminal charges were filed Wednesday against a Salt Lake man who police say intentionally hit a man with his car because he was upset over a broken window.
Larry Will Blackshire III, 24, is charged in 3rd District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony.
The incident occurred on Feb. 21 when witnesses first saw Zacchary Means, 31, break out the back window of a Hyundai belonging to Blackshire, according to charging documents.
When Blackshire returned to his car and found the damage, police say he began looking for Means. After spotting him in a crosswalk near 2000 South and 900 East, Blackshire swerved into Means while driving an estimated 40 mph, the charges state. Means was knocked into the air and tossed several yards.
Police were able to track down Blackshire, but he allegedly ran when he saw officers approaching. He “jumped fences and ran several blocks” before being caught, according to the charging documents. When questioned by police, the charges say he “admitted to intentionally hitting Zacchary with his vehicle.”
Blackshire even recorded a video of the damage to his car and narrated it, stating the damage to the front end of his vehicle was caused by hitting Means, and at one point stated in the video that he “had to hit (him),” according to the charges.
Means was critically injured and placed on life support. He suffered severe head trauma, facial trauma, a back injury, a broken leg, and as of Wednesday was “intubated and scheduled for another surgery,” the charges state.
