A visitor is detained after police discover a “mostly assembled rifle” in a rucksack at City Creek Center

Salt Lake City, Utah – According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, a visitor was arrested after authorities discovered “a mostly assembled rifle” in his backpack at City Creek Center.
The visitor, who was only named as a 33-year-old Australian guy, allegedly “made a statement” that made a store employee worry for another person’s safety. Based on a preliminary investigation, officials stated that there is no further threat to the neighborhood.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, police received a report of a “disturbance at a coffee shop.”
In addition, the employee claimed to have seen what looked to be gun parts in a backpack that belonged to the 33-year-old male, which made them concerned for other people’s safety, according to a press statement from SLCPD.
After arriving on the scene, officers started searching for the individual and collaborated with mall public safety authorities to locate him. During their inquiry, authorities found the “mostly assembled rifle” in his backpack and placed him under arrest.
Police stated that there is currently no proof that the suspect ever put the gun together completely.
According to SLCPD, investigators are attempting to ascertain how the individual obtained the firearm and are in communication with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Officials stated that since no charges have been brought, the suspect’s name has not been made public. The information presented on Sunday, according to SLCPD, was based on an initial analysis of the material that was available, and it could change.
