Nearly $63 million is given to Salt Lake County for a new fast transit bus line
Salt Lake City, Utah – The Utah Transit Authority will receive $62.8 million in subsidies from the Biden Administration on Thursday to assist the construction of a new bus rapid transit route in Salt Lake County. Additionally, the funds will be used to enhance The Midvalley Express’s connectivity, regularity, and accessibility.
“More people in the Salt Lake region will have access to a reliable, affordable, and safe transportation option to get to work or school, visit a doctor, go shopping, and see loved ones thanks to the grant we’re announcing today for the Midvalley Express,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Since March, work on the Midvalley Express has been underway. The total estimated cost, including all improvements, is $104.1 million.
On either side of the seven-mile, 15-station all-electric route, there will be connections to UTA light rail and commuter train. Priority traffic signals and 1.4 miles of bus-only lanes are also planned for the new service in order to expedite rider flow.
In order to link high- and mid-density housing areas to employment, shopping, and medical facilities, the new line is also expected to pass through a number of these locations. The trip will also include a stop at Salt Lake Community College.
According to FTA Deputy Administrator Veronica Vanterpool, “Since over three-quarters of SLCC students work while pursuing a degree, a quick, easy, and dependable transit connection is all the more important.” The Midvalley Express will offer a new, dependable, and practical mode of transportation as the Salt Lake area expands. We are happy to add Salt Lake County to the expanding list of cities that are enjoying the benefits of the biggest investment in first-rate public transit in American history.
“The new line will help prepare the Salt Lake City region for the 2034 Olympic Games by connecting the Frontrunner commuter rail to the Marverik Center, a planned venue for the games,” the Department of Transportation notes.
