Salt Lake City, Utah – The world’s first KFC franchise is located in Salt Lake City. Consider visiting them the next time you’re in the mood for a family bucket of fried chicken.

Colonel Sanders saw the potential in restaurant franchising and assisted in the opening of the first KFC in South Salt Lake on September 24, 1952, according to the Sanders Cafe & Museum. The Colonel dedicated his life to franchising his chicken concept across the nation when his first location shuttered.

However, the Colonel did not embark on the franchising project by himself. According to Deseret News, Sanders was granted permission by his friend Leon ‘Pete’ Harman to serve his chicken at the Harman Cafe, which is situated at 3890 South State Street.

The recognizable paper bucket that was invented by Harman to sell the chicken, 14 pieces, mashed potatoes, buns, and gravy for only $3.50 is credited to him. Nevertheless, the eatery found it difficult to meet the demand for the chicken.

After 72 years, KFC currently runs more than 24,000 locations across more than 145 nations.

The first KFC cafe was demolished in 2004 and replaced with a new eatery and little museum that highlights Utah’s KFC history.
